View Full Version : 1965 D100 Military Build
KI4UJO 09-05-2011, 11:39 AM If you saw my introduction thread, you know that I am going to be restoring a 1965 D100 starting later this year. However, the pictures I provided were from 2007. These were taken yesterday.

Kennewick, here is the casting # from the 170 : 2463430-15
Never mentioned this one, but here it is anyways. It is a late 40's 1/2 ton, and this is what happens when you add salt. http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee392/KI4UJO/IMG00060-20110904-2003.jpg
http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee392/KI4UJO/IMG00061-20110904-2004.jpghttp://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee392/KI4UJO/IMG00063-20110904-2005.jpg
In its case, it was moved out of the cow pasture about 20 years ago, and broke in half while being towed into the woods (cows were getting their hoofs hung on it). It spent most of its life up north. However, even it may live on. I have an uncle who wants to build a rat rod, and is wanting to use the cab and front sheetmetal.
kennewick 09-05-2011, 08:11 PM Cool pics. I'll look into the casting.
geteurdone 09-05-2011, 10:58 PM  they are cool pics and going to be a big restoration project :alien:
KI4UJO 09-06-2011, 07:48 PM You're right, it will be a huge project. The 65 is going to need the cab from the 69 donor. It does have a few slight differences, but I don't really care. However, I have to get my 85 BMW 318i done first. It should be done this month.
kennewick 09-07-2011, 01:10 PM A little salt, a little pepper, a bunch of garlic.....sounds like dinner!
Keep lots of pics so people will believe you when your done. That's what is good about starting a build thread. It keeps a great record of the project.:old:
KI4UJO 09-07-2011, 06:51 PM You're right about build threads. I have one on Bimmerforums in the e30 section for my 85 318i. What is really crappy is my "shop". The driveway is full, and the actual garage has my dad's 75 corvette in it . (His 74 vette takes up the other space in the driveway). So, by the end of this build, we will know if a frame of resto can be done behind a shed.
KI4UJO 12-07-2011, 10:09 PM Sorry for the delay, but this project will not be started until next year. The e30 just got sprayed a few weeks ago, and is yet to be buffed. If we're lucky, I might get going next spring.
kennewick 12-07-2011, 10:39 PM Hey when your ready I will be watchin!!
KI4UJO 12-26-2011, 09:26 PM I still have not done anything to the D100m but I did get the motor in my donor truck running today. The fuel tank was shot, so I set up an external gravity feed system, and got it to run. After adding some oil and coolant, I let it run for somewhere around 10-20 minutes. The clutch master cylinder was bad (I put on a slave cylinder), so I am going to buy one and see if I can take it for one more ride before I strip it.
kennewick 12-27-2011, 12:07 AM If you want we can move this thread to a members build thread for the project. Just give us a name for the project and I can move it for you.
KI4UJO 12-27-2011, 10:18 AM Ok, "1965 D100 Military Build".
kennewick 12-27-2011, 01:41 PM Ok, "1965 D100 Military Build".
I'll get on that today as I have some time later on.:thumbsup::D
kennewick 12-27-2011, 01:53 PM Ok Bro your set with an official Dodge Truck Forum Build Thread. It was nice to get your previous goodies in the record. Take your time, it's a journey that your sharing with the rest of us. I myself get a lot of enjoyment looking into others projects. If you want to you can get the clutch stuff over here too just let me know.:D
KI4UJO 12-27-2011, 09:27 PM I think I will be good with it where it is. Just to ask, do you have any idea what master cylinder that I need? I am assuming that I need the standard clutch master cylinder for a D100, but I want to make sure that there is not another cylinder that I need.
KI4UJO 12-30-2011, 11:01 PM Problem Solved , the standard clutch master will work.
kennewick 12-31-2011, 02:25 AM I suppose you could pick and pull that set up at any JYard. Good job your on it!!
KI4UJO 04-01-2012, 08:34 AM If anyone here is still following this, it looks like I will finally get this going this summer. I have enough large steel beams to build a puller to remove cabs, beds, etc, so that I can do all of the heavy lifting without annoying all of my neigbors. My donor truck is still intact, and the actual truck is still on the farm. So, expect sctual updates in the next few months.
geteurdone 04-01-2012, 12:50 PM  good deal - weather is finally turning nice and comfortable to work in
kennewick 04-01-2012, 11:20 PM I am waiting for ya when your ready.
KI4UJO 07-05-2012, 07:44 AM I've got no way to upload any photos here, but I finally got this started. The cab's coming off the donor truck today, along with the motor and transmission. I should get you guys photos tomorrow night.
kennewick 07-08-2012, 10:06 PM It's exciting to get the cab off then the serious stuff gets off and running.
KI4UJO 07-14-2012, 08:38 PM Well, I didn't exactly get the cab off in the timetable that I thought I would, but here we go anyway. This is before I started with anything

So, it's off. Now what? I was planning on using the 1965 D100 frame/bed, and putting this cab on it, along with the drivetrain. However, another opportunity has popped up. It's still not 100% due to some questions regarding the accident, but I may be able to get a late model (Think 2004-2006, I'm not sure of exact year) Ram 1500 that was rolled, and use the frame off of it. This particular longbed Ram was well optioned, as it has A/C, 5.7 Ltr Hemi, Power Steering, etc. Unfortunately, it's an auto, which really disappoints me. My Dad is the one pushing this late model frame, since he wants to save me the work. What I would probably do would be to build the truck onto the frame, and then go from there on modifications.
kennewick 07-15-2012, 01:11 AM WOW I am still trying to get my head around your build up. I am thinking real cool project. can't wait to see more.
KI4UJO 07-23-2012, 11:20 PM So, this showed up
http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee392/KI4UJO/GEDC0632.jpg

Tomorrow, it comes off...
kennewick 07-25-2012, 10:33 AM I was wondering what your going to do with the 65 bug eye cab?
KI4UJO 07-25-2012, 11:59 AM Well, I'm using its doors and front end sheetmetal. I also need some metal from it that is gone on the 69 cab. I'll keep it around until I get this cab done, but I'm not really sure after that.
kennewick 07-26-2012, 10:57 AM Man what a energetic project. I'm having fun already.:alien:
Can't wait to see that cab come together.
KI4UJO 07-26-2012, 10:33 PM It's in my driveway now, and I bought a high speed air cut off tool:rockon:. I would have photos, but I just got my wisdom teeth removed today, and it'll take a few days to get back to 100%.
kennewick 07-27-2012, 11:42 AM A skinny wheel is one of my favorite tools. Very handy when rebuilding a truck. Just need a lot of air. You can pick up some cheap electric ones at Harbor Freight for about 10 bucks that take 4" wheels. They are handy to have around too.
KI4UJO 07-27-2012, 02:52 PM I've got plenty of air, the compressor I will be using is also what I use for painting. Anyway, here's the cab off of the the truck.

As you can tell, I need a shop, which is coming. Between this and my Dad's vettes, a shop is long overdue. Our shed is now almost entirely moved (Termite rot, so we couldn't just pick it up and move it), and we will be renting a Bobcat soon to level 57's so that we can have a slab poured. We should have it done before winter. However, before I start working on on this truck, I need to get my GY6 Powered Buggy sold, it's getting in the way (It should fund my e30's suspension overhaul, and cover the long needed replacement macbook). After that, I can get the bugeye D100 here, and start building.
KI4UJO 08-10-2012, 11:19 PM Sorry for the lack of updates, but I've had some slowdowns. I decided it would be a good idea to try and get the GY6 Buggy fired off and cleaned up, so I could list it on CL. Instead, it caught on fire. So, I've been repairing the damage to it (engine wiring harness and charred carb). It's almost done now, so I will probably get it listed tomorrow. to complicate things even more, my BMW just lost both power windows, and the Throttle Position Switch. However, I'm going to work with the cab some tomorrow. Mainly, the area on the cowl between the hood and door. Hopefully, there will be enough good metal so that I can just use a light coat of filler over it.
KI4UJO 08-11-2012, 10:48 PM This morning, I got the buggy back together, so I finally got to start on the cab. I figured that the space between the hood and door on the drivers side was a good place to start. So, I started by grinding out as much of the bondo as I could without removing the fender.
http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee392/KI4UJO/GEDC0001-3.jpg
For comparison, the other side

Here's the large dent I managed to make while removing the cab

What I used to pull it out
http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee392/KI4UJO/GEDC0004-4.jpg
However, I knew the fender needed to go anyway, so I went ahead and pulled it. (There is now a large block of wood under the core support so that it does not warp the fender)

This is a great product. You can buy it individually, or in a frame coating kit like I did. It etches rust, and is generally used as the step before applying frame coating.
http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee392/KI4UJO/GEDC0007-4.jpg
As you can see, there wasn't exactly much point in even trying to take the bolts out.

Tomorrow, I'll be doing the same thing to the other side. My plan is to start at the firewall and work backwards to the rear of the cab. so that I'm not just randomly repairing spots. Also, at some point relatively soon, I'm going to have to go to the farm where my truck is located so that my dad can pick up a 454 that my uncle is building for him (It's going in a 74 Vette), and we will probably take the rollback so that we can get my truck.
Looking good all i can say is you're a brave man you've already done more than i could've. That being said I like all the pictures and documentation kinda feels like I'm in the project. Can't wait to see whats next:thumbsup:
MADDOG 08-15-2012, 01:25 PM Man, what a project. Glad you could get back to it and that you are sharing it with us!
KI4UJO 08-15-2012, 11:57 PM Thanks for the support, I'm going to need it. It is just as bad as it looks, especially where the fenders are bolted to the floorpan. There's just not any metal there anymore.
KI4UJO 09-03-2012, 11:00 PM Well. progress has been slow, and I haven't had a chance to put any photos on here. Plus, I've ran into an issue: I don't have a welder, and I need to start replacing metal. Mainly, around the window frames and the front cab corners.
MADDOG 09-04-2012, 12:37 PM Would welding be a new skill to you? Or do you have some experience with it?
Hang in there...I know how much time a job like this can take. I resurrected a 1947 Chevrolet pickup some time ago and it was quite the job. Rust and dents everywhere. When I got it, the floor pan on the passenger side was pretty much swiss cheese with large craters here and there.
You can do it!
KI4UJO 09-04-2012, 09:08 PM I have absolutely zero welding experience. However, I have a dad who at one point ran a professional body shop, so that won't be a problem. He thinks that I should just do everything with a torch (which is in Louisville, where the cab came from), but there's just so much metal that needs replaced. Mainly, I'm selling this buggy so that I would have the cash to get a good MIG to repair this thing with. There is plenty of metal that needs to be replaced, so I should get a lot of practice.
KI4UJO 09-05-2012, 10:23 PM I haven't posted any photos in a while, so here we go. I'll start with the actual truck, which we don't see much of. I was at the farm where the truck is 2 weeks ago, on my way from picking this up. This will be my dad's third vette. It's a 1973 Sportwagon conversion, which have actually been done by ecklers (most were a kit).

http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee392/KI4UJO/GEDC0074-2.jpg
Anyway, onto the truck. I'm glad I've got the spare cab, as the one on the truck is now much worse. As you can see, it's met the fate of a lot of old farm trucks

Pic #4 is so cool I used it for my background. Mega cool!:D
KI4UJO 09-13-2012, 11:35 PM I just changed mine to it, it makes me wish I had it here, instead of 150 miles away. Anyway, after doing a large amount of research, I will be attempting to put in my patch panels with a stick welder. If my grandpa could do it, then so can I. It wil be a learning process, so I'm starting with the floor. My main reason for ding this is that I can get a stick welder that was my grandpa's by simply getting it out of my grandma's basement, versus buying a MIG. It's a lot more cost effective. Also, the main reason for the lack of progress is that I do not yet have a shop to work in, though it will be coming soon. That's about it for now.
kennewick 09-18-2012, 09:55 AM Yeah that pic is a classic. Could be my favorite year for sure.
DukeOfHurl 09-25-2012, 10:39 PM Dude I totally got a cheer for you to put a smile on your face when are fighting through the labor instensive work on this. Remember years ago that when girls were working out in Gym class they would make them chant "I must, I must, I must increase my bust"? So how about for you we make the chant "I must, I must, I must decrease my rust"? Yeah pretty awesome I know. ;)

LOL!
You're right, pretty awesome
